February 2021 My Dear Friends in Christ,
W
hen we give to the Lords work, even amid a pandemic, we demonstrate a deep trust in the Lord to save or pro- vide for us. Lent is a time of sacrifice through giving in preparation for Easter. Each year, without interruption, our northland parishes participate in two major Lenten initiatives that genuinely impact people in our diocese and beyond: Operation Rice Bowl and the Black and Indian Mission Collection. These are challenging times, and I invite you to support the Black and Indian Mission Collection on the first weekend of Lent. Finan- cial support for the Black and Indian Mission Collection has been a vital mechanism that supports evangelization and education efforts for American Indians, Alaskan Americans and African Americans throughout the United States. By our baptism into Christ Jesus, we are all missionaries, beginning with our own fami- lies and parishes. Within the Diocese of Supe- rior, we have religious education programs and Catholic elementary schools that rely on grants from the collection each year. Contributing to the collection on the first weekend of Lent pro- vides an opportunity for all Catholics to actively participate in local evangelization programs. This past year, our diocese received a grant for $60,000 that was made possible only through our local participation in the collection. I also invite you and your family to partic- ipate in Operation Rice Bowl beginning Ash Wednesday, Feb. 17, and continuing through- out Lent. Operation Rice Bowl provides parish resources to bring Lenten spirituality to life for families, parish and school communities while continuing to connect Catholics in the Diocese of Superior with our brothers and sisters in need around the world. Seventy-five percent of your gifts through Operation Rice Bowl support Catholic Relief Services relief work in 100 coun- tries. Twenty-five percent remain within our diocese. Contact your parish to pick up a Rice Bowl for your Lenten gifts or visit crsricebowl. org to watch videos of the people and commu- nities you support through your Lenten gifts to Operation Rice Bowl, and even find special Lenten Recipes. I ask everyone in the Diocese of Superior to be as generous as possible to Operation Rice Bowl and the Black and Indian Mission Col- lection this Lent. Together, let us join in the work of the missionaries across the country as our gifts help their support and evangelization efforts. With warmest personal regards and continu- ing prayer, I am Gratefully yours in the Lord, Most Rev. James P. Powers Bishop of Superior VATICAN CITY (CNS) - Pope Francis announced the establishment of a World Day of Grandparents and the Elderly as a reminder of the important role they play as a link between generations. During his Sunday Angelus address Jan. 31, the pope said the day will be cele- brated every year on the fourth Sunday of July to coincide with the feast of Sts. Joachim and Anne, Jesus grandpar- ents. The first celebration of this day will be July 25. It is important for grandparents to meet their grandchildren and for grandchildren to meet their grandparents because - as the prophet Joel says - grand- parents, before their grand- children, will dream and have great desires, and young people - taking strength from their grandparents - will go forward and prophesy, he said. Highlighting the Feb. 2 feast of the Presentation of the Lord, the pope said the recognition of Christ as the Messiah by the elderly Simeon and Anna is a reminder that the Holy Spirit still stirs up thoughts and words of wisdom in the elderly today.

T
he celebration of the Rite of Election and Call to Continuing Conversion, which takes place annually on the First Sunday of Lent, will be available via livestream on Feb. 21 at 3 p.m. at the Cathedral of Christ the Kings Facebook page. As noted in the instruction memo prepared by Paul Birch, Director of the ice of Wor- ship, It is an important event for those in the parish RCIA process as it ritually highlights the beginning stages of their journey toward baptism and/or full initiation/communion. Through Bishops presence as a celebrant, it also shows how these individuals are linked beyond their local parish to the Universal Church, manifested by our particular Church of the Diocese of Superior. Catechumens - the unbap- tized - and candidates are encouraged to attend with their godparent or sponsor. The ac- companiment of these persons gives testimony of catechumens as worthy for election, found- ed on their election by God, in whose name the Church acts, the memo states. Given the necessary social distancing, the cathedral tours usually offered will not be avail- able, nor the fellowship gather- ing afterwards. The liturgy will be lives- treamed via the Cathedral of Christ the Kings Facebook page and the recorded form will remain available there after- wards. With this ability to share the rite with a broader audi- ence, the ice of Worship is requesting digital images of the catechumens and candidates who will be attending to share along with their names to be included in the broadcast. The full memo is available at catholicdos.org/rite-of-elec- tion-call-to-continuing-con- version. Further questions may be directed to Paul Birch at pbirch@catholicdos.org or 715- 394-0233.
